Data visualization is a design tool to show data and information in a visual way. In contemporary society, data visualization has become more and more popular. Data visualization also named information visualization(“infovis”). According to Margaret Rouse, “Data visualization is a general term that describes any effort to help people understand the significance of data by placing it in a visual context. Patterns, trends and correlations that might go undetected in text-based data can be exposed and recognized easier with data visualization software.” (2010) This conveys that data visualization is not only a way to promote the data, but also a way to examine and understand the data.

There are huge data and information that people do not know how to use them and how to understand them. As a result, people need designers to help them make sense of it. So designers can use this skill to help people turn some complex things to simple and easier to understand. “Data can be very powerful if you can actually understand what it’s telling you. It’s not easy to get clear takeaways by looking at a slew of numbers and stats — you’ve got to have the data presented in a logical, easy-to-understand way.” (Ross Crooks, 2015) This is an example of data visualization below.

The example below is about “The World’s Facebook Relationships Visualized [PIC]”. “This is what the world looks like, according to the Facebook social graph.” By Ben Parr (2010). This graph shows the different connection between people and platform on Facebook. From this picture we can easily and quickly understand the information, such as “Where are the highest concentration of friendships?” and “How do political and geological boundaries affect them?”.

“Information design help us understand, create and interpret reality.”
