WEEK1-ABOUT THE 5C MODEL

Designers produce knowledge in many ways in a design process. As a design student,we need to learn how to expand our understanding of the many ways in which knowledge is produced during a design process. The 5C model, accompanied by 62 method cards, which developed by theories of design thinking, knowledge production, and learning. The 5C model is aims to help design students understand different ways of producing knowledge in practice and reach a new level of conscious action when designing.

There are five categories in the 5C model:’Collect’,’Comprehend’,’Conceptualize’,’Create’ and ‘Collaborate’..Four of the five approaches in the 5C model are responded the mode of knowledge production:How do we produce the knowledge? The first category ‘Collect’ is about the existing situation by physically engaging with the world. It also means moving from the specific to the general level. The second category ‘Comprehend’ is about the existing situation mentally by thinking and working in the abstract. The third category ‘Conceptualize’ is about the future situation mentally by thinking and imaging new possibilities.Next category ‘Create’ is about the future situation by physically making or enacting new possibilities. And the last category ‘Collaborate’ is about the team and team dynamics. From the picture below we can see that the last category placed at the center of the diagram is illustrate that collaboration is important in each of the categories.

So we need to learn the 5C model to help us solve some complex problems which will take place in future design process or team working process.Beside we need to learn the models step by step and practice them in design work.I think these will be helpful to understanding when producing knowledge in design process.
